The Creative Cupboard team have a wealth of collective experience. We tapped into this talent and canvassed the team to get their own top creative tips.
Good design might be more art than science but that doesn't mean you can't apply some basic rules and principles to improve the quality of your work. It's the detail that elevates your creative projects, taking something from "meh" to "magnificent"!
The team share their top creative tips
- Always be mindful of colour combinations, especially when using text. For instance, red text is impactful on a white background but put it against an 80% black and it won’t be readable. If you want people to read what you have designed, legibility should always be key. - Vince
- Use a grid to ensure content is clean, aligned and balanced. Limit fonts to 2-3 & ones that are contrasting to direct attention. However, my number one creative tip is, never use comic sans. Even if you are making comics. Don't do it. Ever! - Jess
- Use grids to iterate new ideas and layouts quickly. I’ve seen a lot of artworkers and designers get hung up on small details and trying to get to a final piece way too soon. By using grids and blocking out the elements, you can quickly trial and discard layouts to come up with a nice composition and then you can focus on populating it with the final elements. It’s a great way of keeping you flexible with your thinking and allowing you to experiment without taking up a lot of time. - Sam
- My best creative tip is: put your work to one side and give it some time. You'll look at it with "fresh eyes" and will get a new perspective about what it needs to make it great. Also, I rarely get my best ideas at a desk so going out for a walk is an important part of the creative process for me. - Helen
- Be confident in your ideas and make sure you believe in them because if you don't then you have already lost the battle. Creativity is subjective but if you are confident in your ideas the people you are presenting to will come along on the journey with you. - Ibby
Perhaps the most important creative tip of all...
Don’t waste time comparing yourself to others when it comes to your work – it’s not the point of being creative. Creativity is all about bringing your own unique perspective to the table. If we all did the same thing, it wouldn’t be creative at all! Instead, look at how you’ve grown over time. Focus on where you are now, what you’ve accomplished, and how your work has evolved. Just remember to lean into your own style… It’s what makes you stand out and what make you, you. - Kayleigh
